FCPS Early Childhood and PreK Programs

Fairfax County Public Schools offers programs for the youngest learners through several programs.

Kindergarten Registration It’s as Easy as 1-2-3…

There’s an easy five-step process outlined for parents looking to register their child for kindergarten:

After the appointment at the school (the student and one caregiver must be present), the student will be ready for orientation, Bridge to Kindergarten, or any other introductory events each school may host. Read more about the registration process.

Attendance Matters

Regular school attendance in elementary school improves the chances that your child will read on grade level.

Chronic absenteeism (missing 18 or more school days per year) is a primary cause of lower academic achievement even when the absences are "excused" or understandable.

Students who attend 90% or more of the school year are more likely to graduate from high school on time.

Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with peer conflicts or facing some other potentially serious difficulty, and help is available.

Build Your Experience while Supporting Clearview ES

If you ever wanted to help at your child’s school, but weren’t sure how, here is your opportunity!  Our school health room is in need of a parent or parents as volunteer on the last week of school, from June 14th thru June 16th, 2023.  If you or someone you know is interested in helping one or all three days, please reach out to our school health aide, Ms. Stephanie Andrade at [email protected] (703) 708-6010 or our public health nurse, Erlin Paredes at [email protected] (571) 536-8764.  Health Room management training will be provided by the Fairfax county health department, date/time: TBD.

Family Media Agreement

A family media agreement is an agreed family plan about how you, as a family, will deal with computers, smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, e-readers and any other digital devices that are in your family's life.

Here is a sample agreement for you to consider bringing into your family life:

Parenting in a digital age

Parenting in the digital age can present both opportunities and challenges. On one hand, technology and the internet provide access to vast amounts of information and resources, making it easier for parents to support their children's education and well-being. On the other hand, the constantly connected nature of digital devices can also raise concerns about screen time, cyberbullying, and exposure to inappropriate content. Balancing the benefits and risks of technology use is an ongoing challenge for many parents in the digital age, here are some video resources that may help.

April’s PTA meeting: New day of the week! New time! New location!

We’re trying something new for our April member meeting. We're gathering at Cornerstone’s Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center (1086 Elden Street, in the Dulles Park Shopping Center) on Tuesday, April 18, at 6:30 p.m. Our agenda includes a guest speaker who will share important updates about changes to health insurance coverage through Medicaid. And refreshments will be served! If you can’t make it in person, please join us via Zoom.

Come play bingo on Thursday, April 27

Mark your calendars because bingo is back! Our “Springo” event will include several rounds of bingo, fun prizes from local businesses, a food truck, and a bake sale. Bus transportation will be available. Watch for Tuesday folder flyers with more details about pre-ordering bingo cards and opportunities to volunteer at the event. Proceeds from bingo card sales will go toward Staff Appreciation Week and funds raised from the bake sale will go toward the sixth grade year-end celebration.

Consider joining the PTA Board

We are now starting the process for electing the next PTA Board for the 2023-24 school year. We are a fun group of parents who want to make a difference for all Clearview students and staff. And we are ready to answer your questions!

"I may be interested. What are the open roles?"

While we hope some of our current board members return (because passing down knowledge is always a good thing), we do need these five roles filed for the 2023-24 school year:

  • President
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary
  • Vice President of Fundraising
  • Vice President of Programs

"I’m really busy. I just don’t know if I have time for the PTA Board."

We completely understand. This year’s PTA board members are all working parents with full-time jobs. From August to May, we meet once a month (at a well-known local gathering spot!) for a board meeting with the administration team, then we host the monthly PTA meeting. If you want to know more about the additional tasks each of us does for our individual roles, send us an email at [email protected]

"I don’t know if I have the right skill set to be a PTA Board member."

We are a team with lots of different skills who enjoy working together. The most important qualification is a desire to do something good for the Clearview community.

Okay, I’m in (or I'll kindly “volun-tell” a family member). What’s the next step?"

Nominations are due by Friday, April 7. You can nominate yourself (or family member!) by completing the short form with a checklist of positions (link to English and Spanish versions). Snap a picture of your completed form and send it to Amana Katora at [email protected]

 What happens next:

  • We will make nomination announcements at the April 18 PTA meeting.
  • The election of new officers will be conducted at the May PTA meeting.
  • The current and new boards will transition in June before summer
  • break

Supporting our 6th graders

It’s a Clearview tradition to have a sixth grade celebration at the end of the year as students say goodbye to elementary school and hello to middle school! Due to the pandemic, this year’s sixth graders missed out one some special rites-of-passage, so we want to make sure they have an extra-special celebration on June 13. The party is a self-funded event, which means you’ll start to see our sixth graders (and their families) raise money through spirit nights, bake sales, and other initiatives. If you’d like to make a tax-deductible donation to the cause, you can use this online donation form or send in a check payable to Clearview Elementary PTA and a note that it’s for the sixth grade celebration. Thanks for your special support!

Dear Clearview Families,

This week at Clearview, preK-6th grade students received lessons delivered by educators from Fairfax County’s Department of Family Services. The ChildHelp Speak Up Be Safe Curriculum, a researched-based prevention curriculum is designed to teach children how to identify abuse, identify and talk to safe adults, and provides five key safety rules children can follow to help adults keep them safe.  The program also teaches students how to identify and build skills to resist all types of abuse including: physical, emotional, sexual, neglect, bullying, and cyberbullying.

Thanks to the local fire department for making a visit this week.

Family-Facing Curriculum for Core Content Being Added to Public FCPS Website

On March 9, 2023, the curriculum overviews and unit standards from the planning and pacing guides were posted on the FCPS public web and shared with the School Board. Over 86 web pages are being developed to reflect the scope and sequence of core content areas across K-12. The goal is to provide families a comprehensive overview of what students are learning and when they are learning it.

An introductory paragraph on each grade level or course page includes the following statements: “The objectives and outcomes for each unit are common across FCPS and based on the Virginia Standards of Learning. The pacing by quarter and by week provides an example of how the curriculum can be organized throughout the year. Teacher teams may adjust the pacing or order of units to best meet the needs of students.”

Information will be updated at the start of each school year to reflect curriculum updates. To access the grade level and/or course web pages directly, first search for the level within the Academics page, select grade level or content, and click on Year at a Glance.

Daylight Saving Time, March 12

Sunday, March 12, at 2am, Daylight Saving Time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes.

Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run or dart into the street or cross between parked cars.

Parent Coffee, February 28

Today there is a lot of pressure to look a certain way or be up to the standards of social media Likes and Followers. Please join us to discuss social media pressure on body image and the relationship to eating disorders. Our youth face this pressure every day and, more than ever, it’s a topic that we need to learn more about so we can best support health and wellness. This Parent Coffee will be presented by our School Psychologist, Christine Bilodeau.

Thank You Bus Drivers and Attendants

Wednesday was School Bus Driver Appreciation Day (and we appreciate our drivers and attendants every day)! Special thanks to students, parents, teachers, and staff for finding unique ways to thank our bus drivers and attendants for keeping students safe.

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

Every year, absences increase in the weeks before and after spring break. Please make sure your child is in school every day until vacation starts. Our teachers will be teaching, and our students will be learning. Visit our website for more attendance resources

Welcome to Clearview, Mrs. Deborah Owens

Mrs. Deborah Owens has been serving as a substitute teacher at Clearview since March; however, on Monday, she will officially join Clearview as a Site-Based Substitute Teacher (a new position in FCPS).

Healthy Relationships

Relationships are important components in the development of living a fulfilling life. Bonds and companionship provide emotional support and are effective in increasing health and wellbeing. Emotional support decreases fears and helps people to thrive.

Positive relationships encourage growth, comfort, and the creation of emotional bonds that provide feelings of joy and support. Open communication and commitment are two of the best ways to foster this type of relationship.

Common values to develop in healthy relationships include:

  • honesty
  • reciprocity
  • effort
  • respect
  • safety & security
  • laughter
  • acceptance
  • healthy boundaries
  • unconditional love
  • friendship
  • non-judgmental

It is important to do our part in the creation of positive partnerships, social circles, and healthy connections. Encourage the support and inspiration of those that may be silently vulnerable and struggling to feel safe.

Dear Clearview Families,

Clearview students and staff had a very cold start to February.  As you know, on Wednesday, we quickly and safely evacuated the building after being alerted by the carbon monoxide alarm.  Students followed directions to keep everyone safe while we waited for approximately 40 minutes while the fire department cleared the building.  BRRRRRR! If you haven’t yet, please be sure to complement your child’s behavior.

The famous Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow yesterday (Groundhog Day) in Pennsylvania, meaning six more weeks of winter!  Thank you for sending your child to school each day with winter weather attire. Please let us know if there is anything your child needs (coat, gloves, hat) to stay warm while outside.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions or compliments you may have. If you have seen a Clearview staff member going above and beyond, fill out an FCPS Cares here.

Have a WONDERFUL weekend!

Text-to-Speech Available on FCPS Websites

FCPS is introducing an innovative way to address the diverse needs of the community. A new text-to-speech feature, available on the FCPS website and each school website, will read the words aloud from webpages.

Low-Cost Internet for Free and Reduced-Price Eligible Students

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) is a new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) program to lower internet costs for families with children who have been eligible for free or reduced-price meals within the last 12 months. A qualifying household will receive $30 per month toward internet services and a one-time discount of up to $100 for a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet. Families can check their eligibility and register at AffordableConnectivity.gov or by calling 877-384-2575.

Eating Disorders

The Code of Virginia, 22.1-273.2, requires Virginia Public Schools to provide, on an annual basis, parent educational information regarding eating disorders for pupils in grades five through twelve. According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2022),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. While no one knows for sure what causes eating disorders, a growing consensus suggests that it is a range of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. Eating disorders are not fads or phases, and can have serious consequences for health, productivity, and relationships.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a webpage with detailed information and resources to be provided to parents and guardians of Fairfax County Public Schools. This information may be found at the following link:

Revised Absenteeism Message

During the height of the Pandemic, the absenteeism message on the attendance line was focused primarily on symptoms related to COVID-19.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD), FCPS has revised the current absenteeism message to allow schools to gather information which reflects a greater range of communicable diseases that may impact schools and the community.

As a result, we have updated our absenteeism messages on the attendance line and online attendance submission sites with the following language:

“Please leave a specific message about why your student is not attending today. Be sure to include symptoms if they are ill, especially if they have fever, nausea, vomiting, sore throat and/or cough. If your child has a diagnosis from a health care provider, please include that information.”

Thank you for helping keep our school and community healthy!

Salad Bar

Great news: Clearview will be opening the salad bar on January 25!  We encourage you to watch this video with your child so that they can prepare for the experience.

Salad bars offer a variety of nutritious choices every day and encourage children to consistently build meals based on a

foundation of colorful fruits and vegetables. Science-based research proves that changing fresh food access and availability in school settings has a direct correlation to wellness. Incorporating salad bars is a strategy that models healthy eating and reinforces positive behaviors.

FY 2023-24 Proposed Budget Highlights

At the January 12 School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid proposed a budget for FY 2024 that focuses on attracting and retaining teachers and staff, initiatives aimed at closing the achievement gap for all students, and gives our youngest learners a strong start, including investments for special education students impacted during the pandemic.

The FY 2024 Proposed Budget totals $3.5 billion—a net increase of $249.6 million or 7.6% over the FY 2023 Approved Budget. Nearly 86% of the budget is targeted at instruction. The Proposed Budget focuses on several key areas:

  • Innovative investments that close the achievement gap for all students:
    • Equitable access to literacy.

Does Your Child Refuse to Go to School?

Each year, nearly 5% of youth experience school refusal. This refers to a child refusing to go to school on a regular basis or remain in school throughout the day due to significant emotional distress. School refusal includes kindergarten students with relatively mild separation anxiety and more severe cases where a student misses weeks or months of school because of debilitating anxiety or depression. Read how to get your child back to school in the Healthy Minds Blog or learn more about attendance policies

It’s time to donate supplies! Many classrooms are running low or are completely out of items like disinfecting wipes, dry erase markers, pencils, and more. Purchase items from the Amazon Wish List for delivery to Clearview or drop off donations at Sarah Stein’s home (email her to coordinate). All donations are due by Friday, Feb. 10. Thank you for your donations!

Would you enjoy another round of BINGO?

You have done such an amazing job of raising funds for field trips (thank you!), that we can now shift our focus to another major budget item: showing appreciation for our wonderful Clearview staff. To raise funds for Staff Appreciation Week in May, we thought it would be fun to host a spring bingo fundraiser (SPRINGO!). If you’d like to be involved, here are a few ideas:

  • Donate prizes: we welcome any new, unopened items that would be enjoyed by our families (just in case you’ve been doing any post-holiday clean outs…). If you have connections to local businesses, we would greatly appreciate any donations, including gift baskets, gift cards, or gift certificates.
  • Plan the event: choose the date, identify volunteers, check inventory of bingo cards/markers and order any additional supplies.
  • Volunteer: prize collector, set up, greeter, sales, caller, prize distributor, clean up

Email us at [email protected] if you’d like to get involved! Whoever volunteers to be the event planner can work with Mrs. Almquist to choose the date!

Connection Combats Addiction

Families who have a common mission based on autonomy and openness instead of secrecy and silence thrive. Families teach young people how to manage stress when they communicate honestly and openly with one another. Learning how to manage stress early in life could be a major factor in whether or not a young person decides to use drugs.

Research has shown that family therapy is the best treatment option for young people who misuse drugs and alcohol (SAMHSA). Many people use drugs to manage life’s hardships when they feel disconnected from themselves or others. The opposite of addiction is connection, and young people benefit from connection with their families.

Why Do We Need a Strategic Plan?

The Strategic Planning process is well underway, with the Community Forums beginning in less than three weeks. But, why do we need a new strategic plan?

Similar to a roadmap, a strategic plan clearly defines the best route for us to take in the years ahead to reach our goals. Our students are preparing for careers that don’t exist today. In order to keep pace with these needs, we need to rethink our plans for the future—and how we will best serve our students for this new era.

Salad Bar

Dear Clearview Families,

Thank you for encouraging your child to participate in Spirit Week this week.  It was a truly special week, filled with excitement, as winter break approached. Students and staff were beaming as students delivered unexpected handwritten notes and, in some cases, small tokens of appreciation to staff and vice-versa.  A HUGE thank you to the families who supported the SOUPER Send-off Lunch for Clearview teachers and staff.  We appreciate your support and delicious soup, breads, and goodies!  Clearview is such a special place!

Taking a (technology-free) walk as a family creates a unique opportunity for family members to share what is in their hearts or just marvel at the natural beauty all around us.  Some days will be warmer than others during these last few days of autumn and first couple weeks of winter but don’t let the cold weather stop you. There is something truly special about coming in from the cold and warming up with a cup of hot cocoa!

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions or compliments you may have. If you have seen a Clearview staff member going above and beyond, fill out an FCPS Cares here.

Have a WONDERFUL weekend!

These cameras will be in nine school zones and one construction zone. Thanks to our county partners for helping to improve the safety of our students and staff.

Studies show that speed camera enforcement is effective in improving safety by reducing speeding, accidents, and injuries. Read more about the school zone speed camera pilot program.

Thank you to Kari Kain, Lakisha Batts, and our fabulous PTA volunteers for providing an exciting and successful Book Fair experience for Clearview students.  It was awesome to see students so excited about books, posters, book marks, pencils, and other school supplies.  Several students used some (or all) of their money to purchase items for family members and/or friends which demonstrated the tons of kindness Clearview students have in their hearts.

This afternoon, students had a special treat.  The Herndon High School orchestra came to visit Clearview for a surprise performance!  We are so thankful for the strong fine arts programs in the Herndon Pyramid and throughout FCPS.

Check It Off Fall Fieldtrip Fundraiser

Another exciting update: on the evening of our final day of Check It Off, we’ve raised $8,745 toward field trips! Thank you so much to our 140+ donors, which included students, parents, grandparents, extended family members, staff, former Clearview families, and community members.

When we put together this year's PTA budget and saw that it would cost about $13,000 to fund a field trip for each grade level, it was daunting. When we set our goal to raise half that amount ($6,500) through Check It Off, we knew it was a big stretch. But you came through with so much generosity! Please know that we were grateful for every donation, but were especially touched by the dollar bills that arrived with paper forms filled out by students.

Since the final reminder flyer was in this week’s Tuesday Folders, we expect to receive a few more paper donations through the end of the week. Once we tally all the final paper donations, we’ll share the results of the class contests. The classes that raised the most money and had the greatest level of participation will earn an extra recess. And we’re working with Ms. Almquist and her team to schedule the school-wide pajama day, likely for when students return from winter break.

Just a few more THANK YOUs: Ms. Bobby and Ms. Buss for organizing all the incoming donations; Mr. Redford and Mr. Newbold for the WBZZ promotions; Ms. Charlton for the News You Choose promotions; Ms. Romoleroux and Ms. Webb for translations and outreach; classroom teachers for your encouragement and reminders; Alecia Nault for copying all the Tuesday flyers; and Amanda Robson for the “help the hive” graphic.

 Parents Night Out

  • Friday, Dec. 9 from 6-8 p.m. in the Clearview gym and cafeteria

Feed your kids, then drop off your current Clearview students while you enjoy two hours of free time to go out to dinner, do some holiday shopping, or just relax! Students will watch a movie, do a craft, and have a light snack.

In return, we ask that you donate toward our field trip fundraising efforts. Our suggested amount is $20 per student but we welcome donations of all amounts and encourage you to give what you can.

Register and make your donation by Wednesday, Dec. 7 either online (https://bit.ly/3AlVCn1) or by completing the form in your child’s Tuesday Folder (please staple checks to the form and place any cash in a Ziploc bag).
