Information for Caregivers on Eating Disorders

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information annually to parents/caregivers of students in grades 5-12. According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023):

  • Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.
  • There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a webpage with detailed information and resources about eating disorders. In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll-free, confidential Helpline: 1-800-931-2237.

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow.

Regular, on-time attendance is a key ingredient to your child’s success.  Keeping in mind that students are to stay home if they have a fever (of 100.4 or above), vomiting, or diarrhea, attending school must be a top priority.

  • Regular school attendance in elementary school improves the chances that your child will read on grade level.
  • Chronic absenteeism (missing 18 or more school days per year) is a primary cause of lower academic achievement even when the absences are "excused" or understandable.
  • Students who attend 90% or more of the school year are more likely to graduate from high school on time.
  • Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with peer conflicts or facing some other potentially serious difficulty, and help is available.

Weekly Student Attendance by Grade (%)

Kindergarten  73% First Grade 79% Second Grade 86% Third Grade 86% Fourth Grade 94% Fifth Grade 88% Sixth Grade 91% Whole School  87.4%

Family Life Education (FLE)

Students in grades K-6 participate in Family Life Education (FLE) instruction through their classroom teacher. Students in Kindergarten through grade three receive instruction in an emotional and social health unit.

Students in grades 4-6 receive instruction in a human growth and development unit and an emotional and social health unit. For more information about the FCPS Family Life Education program, please see the detailed grade-level program descriptions at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-family-life-education-fle.  In addition, grade level-specific curriculum lessons are available for review in multiple locations:

  • Online in Schoology - includes lessons and media titles that FCPS has streaming rights for. Any additional media or book titles that are not streamed are available at your child’s school library.
  • Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.
  • Your child’s school. Please contact the school to schedule a time to review lessons and/or media.
  • City of Fairfax Regional Library – lessons only.  Media is not available.

You are invited to attend an evening opportunity to preview the Family Life Education media and lessons and to talk with school staff about the program. The meeting will be held virtually on December 2, 2024 at 7:00pm on ZOOM at the following link: https://myfcpsk12.zoom.us/j/93074228851.

Parents/guardians who do not wish to have their child participate in FLE instruction may choose to opt their child out of any or all of the lessons. If you would like to opt your child out of one or more lessons, please fill out the form provided to you in your child’s orientation packet at the beginning of the school year or you may access the opt out forms online at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-family-life-education-fle. If you have already indicated your desire to opt your child out of FLE lessons by using the form provided earlier in the school year, you do not need to complete another form. Should you opt your child out and then later decide you want your child included in FLE instruction, you must notify your child’s school principal in writing before instruction begins.

An alternative non-FLE health instructional program is provided for children who do not take part in FLE instruction, and every effort is made to foster understanding and respect for family choices and to avoid peer pressure for or against participation in the program.

Instruction of the instructional units occurs at various times during the school year. Please contact your child’s teacher for specific dates of FLE instruction. We look forward to working as your partner in providing information that will help your child make healthy choices related to the exciting changes and new challenges they will be facing in the next few years.

Current (Fall Session) clubs will not meet on Tuesday, November 26.  There will be two more weeks of current clubs (Fall Session) in December.  Winter Session will begin the first week of January.  Families will receive transportation information prior to winter break.

The Clearview Community Connect

Stronger Together

Dear Clearview Families,

As we move into the season of gratitude, we're taking time to reflect on the many things we are grateful for, including all of our Yellow Jackets!  We are so proud of the kindness they exude each and every day, their efforts, and their accomplishments. As Thanksgiving approaches, we reflect on having an “attitude of gratitude” and encourage students to express their appreciation for their families, friends, and teachers.

Would you like to recognize someone from our school who goes above and beyond? Submit a nomination to FCPS Cares.

Have a great weekend,

Stephanie Almquist         Joshua Redford         Rachel Charlton

Having a copy of this letter in the windshield will facilitate entry.

NO passenger drop-offs are permitted at the intersections of Elden Street and Sterling Road OR the intersection of Elden Street and Locust Street, for traffic control and safety reasons. Parade goes light rain or shine! Please plan your costumes, float, and performance accordingly and make sure your group is prepared with appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes. The route is approximately ¾ of a mile and takes 1-1.5 hours to complete the full parade. Severe weather may delay the start. Call 703-435-6866 for updated information the morning of the parade.

Look for parade marshals wearing yellow jackets to answer your questions.

  • For the enjoyment of all attending the parade please perform throughout the parade route. A 90-120 second performance at the review stand is strongly encouraged. All other performances should occur at a half step forward movement. Spacing between units will be done at the start of parade, please maintain this spacing throughout the route.
  • For everyone’s safety, we discourage the handing, tossing or passing out of any items (candy, literature, etc.) along the Parade route. If you are handing out materials, you must provide at least one person upon completion of the parade to clean up along the parade route and properly discard any items left behind.
