The Clearview Community Connect

Stronger Together

Dear Clearview Families,

We could not be more proud of our students during the awesome visit by the Washington Commanders yesterday! They did an incredible job sharing the hype, while at the same time being respectful. Major Tuddy said that Clearview is his favorite school and that the students were some of the most respectful children he’d been around.  He loved the energy of our community.  Please congratulate your children on a job very well done!

Would you like to recognize someone from our school who goes above and beyond? Submit a nomination to FCPS Cares.

Science Olympiad Competition- Volunteers Needed on Saturday, February 15

As you may know, students in the 5-6th grade Science Olympiad Club will be competing at Centerville High School next month. All teams are required to register 3 volunteers in advance of the event. If you have a few hours available to lend on Saturday, February 15, please register at the VASO Volunteer Portal. Volunteers will sign up, create a volunteer profile that links them to Clearview, and select one or more shifts to cover throughout the tournament day. Shifts are 2-2.5 hours in length, and do not require any advance preparation. Volunteers are often acting as a second adult in a testing room, graders, timers/spotters in build events, etc. There are also some shifts that can be covered by high school students, but those go quickly! There is a tournament volunteer roles video in the Mentor/Parent section of the VASO Resources page, as well.

Volunteers are welcome to join us on the bus to and from the event.

For more information about the FCPS Family Life Education program, please see the detailed grade-level program descriptions at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-family-life-education-fle.  In addition, grade level-specific curriculum lessons are available for review in multiple locations:

  • Online in Schoology - includes lessons and media titles that FCPS has streaming rights for. Any additional media or book titles that are not streamed are available at your child’s school library.
  • Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.
  • Your child’s school. Please contact the school to schedule a time to review lessons and/or media.
  • City of Fairfax Regional Library – lessons only.  Media is not available.

You are invited to attend an evening opportunity to preview the Family Life Education media and lessons and to talk with school staff about the program. The meeting will be held virtually on December 2, 2024 at 7:00pm on ZOOM at the following link: https://myfcpsk12.zoom.us/j/93074228851.

Should you opt your child out and then later decide you want your child included in FLE instruction, you must notify your child’s school principal in writing before instruction begins.

An alternative non-FLE health instructional program is provided for children who do not take part in FLE instruction, and every effort is made to foster understanding and respect for family choices and to avoid peer pressure for or against participation in the program.

Instruction of the instructional units occurs at various times during the school year. Please contact your child’s teacher for specific dates of FLE instruction. We look forward to working as your partner in providing information that will help your child make healthy choices related to the exciting changes and new challenges they will be facing in the next few years.

The route is approximately ¾ of a mile and takes 1-1.5 hours to complete the full parade. Severe weather may delay the start. Call 703-435-6866 for updated information the morning of the parade.

Look for parade marshals wearing yellow jackets to answer your questions.

  • For the enjoyment of all attending the parade please perform throughout the parade route. A 90-120 second performance at the review stand is strongly encouraged. All other performances should occur at a half step forward movement. Spacing between units will be done at the start of parade, please maintain this spacing throughout the route.
  • For everyone’s safety, we discourage the handing, tossing or passing out of any items (candy, literature, etc.) along the Parade route. If you are handing out materials, you must provide at least one person upon completion of the parade to clean up along the parade route and properly discard any items left behind.

National Family Engagement Month

This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success.

FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.

Additionally, every school has a family liaison who will welcome and orient families, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development. We invite you to call or email Mary Specht, Clearview’s fabulous Family Liaison with questions.

Correction to Thanksgiving Luncheon Information

We apologize for the error in the November calendar that was sent home via Tuesday Folders. The CORRECT information for the Thanksgiving Luncheon is below:

Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Clearview teachers and staff have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we determine which students need extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

We will also have new ways for you to help your child practice their reading and writing skills at home. These resources are coming soon!

Calling All Yellow Jackets to Join the Herndon Homecoming Parade!

We hope to see you at the Herndon Homecoming parade on November 9 at 9:30 AM in the town of Herndon. Students from all grades are invited to dress in yellow and black and march in the parade with sixth graders this year.  Students marching in the parade must be accompanied by an adult and should plan to arrive at Herndon Middle School no later than 9:15 AM.

Birthday Celebrations

If you celebrate Birthdays in your family, we are happy to have the class sing Happy Birthday, announce your child’s name on WBZZ morning news show, and provide a Happy Birthday pencil to your child, as well.

If you are planning to send in something special for your child to share with classmates, we ask that you consider non-food items so that all students can be included.  Some families send in pencils, erasers, or stickers, for example.

Diwali

🪔 Tomorrow, we wish a fun Diwali to all celebrating! Diwali is a festival of lights and one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs & some Buddhists. The festival represents the symbolic victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.

All Saints Day and Día de los Muertos

Tomorrow, we recognize those in our community observing All Saints Day and Día de los Muertos. For Catholics, All Saints Day (November 1) celebrates all those who are with God in Heaven, known and unknown. All Souls Day (November 2), known in Mexico and Latin America as Día de los Muertos, is a day of remembrance and prayer for all those who have died, especially for the souls who may be in purgatory. These special days are celebrated by Catholics, Anglicans, and some Protestants throughout the world.

Stronger Together

Dear Clearview Families,

Students have had a lot of indoor recess over the last two weeks due to the rain so they have been enjoying the engaging and fun movement opportunities that teachers embed in their lessons even more than usual. Hours of daylight in the northern hemisphere will continue to decrease through December 21 so we encourage families to enjoy time outdoors in the daylight when you can (to support wellness) and to wear bright colors if you are outside in the evenings (to support safety).

Stay engaged with us through our website, Facebook, Instagram, Talking Points, events, and parent-teacher conferences. Your involvement is essential in supporting success here at school and in the future.

Have a wonderful weekend,
